In the articles below three contributors discuss recent progress in the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of deep vein thrombosis. Mr. Norman Browse concludes that not only is phlebography the most valuable method for diagnosis but that it may help correct management. Dr. P. T. ilute emphasizes that anticoagulants may be ineffective in preventing pulmonary embolism from recent thrombi in the popliteal or more proximal deep veins, and that fibrinolytic drugs are a possible alternative to surgery. Considering surgical management, Mr. G. E. Mayor illustrates the usefulness of classifying deep vein thrombosis as peripheral or iliofemoral.
